The causes of lower leg ulcers are intrinsically complex and almost exclusively of endogenous internal origin.
Undoubtedly, however, the most common cause of lower leg ulcers is venous hypertension and arterial insufficiency.

Venous ulcers
arise as a result of severely impaired function of the venous system of the lower limbs. In advanced venous insufficiency, the venous circulation in the lower limbs is impaired and the venous valves are damaged, resulting in blood stasis and increased pressure in the vessels.
Valves control the flow of blood so that it flows in a single direction toward the heart. When valves are damaged and malfunctioning, blood flows back to the lower limb. The blood pressure in the venous system increases and, if untreated, causes damage to subsequent valves and superficial veins. The walls of the veins lose their elasticity and flexibility and become thicker.
For the purposes of treatment and prevention of re-occurrence of ulceration, it is very important to identify areas of venous insufficiency.
